The VBHC concept
Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) is a health care strategy that aims to provide value for patients through improving health outcomes while lowering costs. The framework, concepts, practices, theories and tools of Value Based Healthcare (VBHC) are described by Prof. Michael Porter in his famous article in the New England Journal of Medicine (Porter, M.E. 2010). Prof. Dr. Fred van Eenennaam, the chairman of Value Based Health Care Center Europe, has a close relationship with Prof. Michael Porter.
The ideas have proven their worth in renowned centers worldwide, including the Cleveland Clinic, UCLA Medical Center, Joslin Diabetes Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Schön Klinik, Oak Street Health, Santeon, and Erasmus MC.
“Europe has been in the lead, so we appreciate what VBHC Center Europe has been able to do for the VBHC movement”
Prof. Michael E. Porter, PhD
VBHC Methodology
Prof. Dr. Fred van Eenennaam has bundled the existing information to write a methodology based on the principles of Value-Based Health Care by Harvard Professors Porter, Teisberg and Kaplan, which got a lot of feedback from international colleagues. The methodology is based on starting the dialogue with medical professionals, care providers and executives on Patient Value. With practical tools, workshops and pressure-cooker sessions, a hands-on approach is provided to ‘change’ the view of the organization and its employees.
“Since the start of the VBHC Center Europe in 2008, great progress has been made. Very inspirational to see the progress and excitement of good VBHC implementation in Europe and the world!”
Prof. dr. Fred van Eenennaam, chairman VBHC Center Europe
VBHC Prize 2024
The Value-Based Health Care Prize seeks to recognize those projects that have adopted a fundamentally new line of thinking in creating value for patients in terms of real outcomes, real cost, real connections, one common language and are doctor-led initiatives.
VBHC Dragons Grant and Endorsement 2024
The Value-Based Health Care Dragons Grant & Endorsement is developed in the interest of bringing together highly experienced early adaptors of the Value-Based Healthcare concept and pioneering early stage initiatives. The goal is to endorse the VBHC rough diamonds that need some shaping and grant the VBHC growth diamonds that need to scale-up in order to accelerate their VBHC initiative. These nominees are the VBHC Prize winners of the future!
VBHC Dragons of the Americas
April 18-19th, 2024. The first edition of VBHC Dragons of the Americas will take place on April 18-19 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as part of the inaugural VBHC Summit of the Americas. It will be an occasion to celebrate and learn from existing VBHC implementation initiatives from across Canada and Brazil, to hear about promising ongoing projects, and to network and mobilize like-minded, value-driven healthcare leaders.
VBHC Chapters
Chapters are formed by a group of people sharing insights and experiences on the implementation of Value-Based Health Care concepts. Topics are for example Cardiology, Elderly Care and Autism. Chapters meet under Chatham House Rules. Exchanging experiences with other professionals can result in case discussions, whitepapers about medical conditions, initiated studies, conferences and education materials. The Value-Based Health Care Center Europe provides organizational support as well as input from the network. The chapters on Neurology, Oncology and Women’s Health are in build-up phase. If you are interested in forming a chapter, please contact us.
